There are a number of different ways to pick up on the signs and symptoms of alcoholism or drug addiction. Usually your instincts will tell you something is wrong, but we have a tendency to second-guess ourselves so some ‘hard facts’ are usually required.

It also depends on which side of the fence you’re looking at the problem. Are you wanting to know the signs of addiction for your own benefit because you’re worried about your own alcohol or drug intake?

A couple of the main physical signs of alcoholism or drug addiction are liver problems and high blood pressure, which can cause severe tiredness or even result in things like strokes and heart attacks. But unless you see a Doctor in time, you often won’t pick on them until it’s too late.

Some of the ‘easier’ symptoms or signs of an addiction to pick up on - are things like beginning to experience severe withdrawals from drinking or using, needing more to get the same effects, and broken promises (even to yourself) that you’re going to stop.

I guess from my side, the signs that I always look out for to indicate that things are seriously wrong, is when you begin to lose yourself, and everyday issues that used to fine are impacted - which can be anything from relationships, jobs, college and friendships.

Another good way to test for addiction is to use psychometric type addiction and alcoholism tests - which are mostly very accurate in identifying a genuine addiction problem. I don’t unfortunately have enough space to put them here - but feel free to visit my website to try one.

So at the end of day, determining whether or not there is indeed an addiction problem, can be done using a variety of different methods. So look at all the signs and symptoms, try a ‘test’ and I think you will have a pretty good idea.

Many women spend a large portion of their pregnancy stressing about how much weight they’re gaining and how quickly they can get it off afterwards. It’s especially hard when you’re trying to care for a brand new baby. Just as it took you 9 whole months to gain the weight, you should not expect that it will melt off in 9 days.

Well, our society tells us otherwise. Celebrities are featured in magazines appearing to be as thin as ever just a month after giving birth. They are celebrated as if everyone should strive to do the same. However, healthy weight loss takes time. Losing weight too fast lowers your chances of being healthy and raises your chances of gaining it back.

A good way to lose pounds is to breastfeed. The purpose of gaining weight during pregnancy is to store calories, nutrients and vitamins for your baby to use even after birth. Breastfeeding burns 200-500 extra calories a day. Helping you get back to your pre-baby weight is one of the ways nature can play a part. Breastfeeding is not the only way to get back your shape, and thankfully there are alternatives for women who simply are not able to nurse their babies.

You need to eat healthy food so as to lose weight and to provide your baby with sufficient breast milk. Parents want their infants to have the healthiest meal available. All the nutrients gained from your daily diet will be deposited into your breast milk, and if by chance you are not consuming the right foods, there will be very few remaining nutrients for yourself. Your metabolism will be increased and you will not be hungry if you consume 4-5 small meals during the day rather than 3 large meals.

Most mothers find that even after they have achieved their pre-pregnancy weight, their bodies have taken on a slightly different shape than before. These muscles can be strengthened by exersize, giving you a firm and fit physique.

When you are starting a exercise regimen, it is important to start out very slowly. After giving birth, take the time to rest and heal,and take the time to become close with your baby. When you begin exercising, begin slowly with ten minutes of exertion, and then slowly increase the time as you feel more able.

Pregnancy has a powerful impact on your body. Spend this valuable time focused on your newborn, not your weight. Weight loss can happen at any time, but children aren’t babies forever.

Remember too, that not everyone loses weight at the same rate. Some people start at the extremities, while other people start at the hips and thighs. If you are losing weight everywhere except in your stomach area, don’t get stressed out - just keep doing what you’re doing.

When you are looking for ways to eat that will reduce belly fat, remember that you should think about when you are eating. Late night snacking is one way to make your belly swell, particularly if you make a habit of it. The food that you eat right before you go to bed isn’t going to get a chance to get processed as easily or as efficiently as the food that you eat during the day. Struggling through drug addiction or alcoholism is terrible. I know - I’ve been there. It fills you with all sorts of really horrible emotions - guilt, shame, you don’t always feel ‘fully-human’ sometimes - and so this can make you feel especially misunderstood and lonely.

One of the things that makes it especially hard dealing with drug addiction or alcoholism, is that even though medically addiction is now generally regarded as a disease, a lot of people don’t accept that or see it that way. It’s not like coming out with a disease like cancer say, where you’ll be embraced, encouraged and supported by almost everyone.

By acknowledging an addiction to alcohol or drugs, there are still loads of people who will perceive you as simply being weak and a failure more than anything else. And that’s why I believe so many addicts live in denial for so long - because by coming to terms with their addiction would mean agreeing with those people who do perceive alcoholics and drug addicts just being weak and failures as people.

You convince yourself then that your alcohol abuse and drug abuse is totally under control and manageable - because doing otherwise will almost be like admitting you’re a failure and you’re also convinced that’s how you would be perceived if you did so. There is without doubt a certain stigma attached to being labelled an addict - and avoiding that truth protects you, at least in your own mind.

That’s why knowing what your options are and where you can turn to for help are so important. You don’t have to worry about the whole world finding out, there is excellent help available that will protect your privacy and dignity.

But like with any illness - the worst thing you can do is to do nothing. The longer you leave it, the worse it gets. And that applies to you whether you’re reading this as someone who has a drug or alcohol problem - or a family member/friend of one.

You may even only think that at this stage you’re only dealing with the problem of alcohol abuse or drug abuse - rather than fully developed alcoholism or drug addiction - and that the problem is still under control. Don’t be fooled because often it’s already far worse than you think.

So even whether or not you’re entirely sure that you or someone you care about actually suffers from an addiction to drugs or alcohol - make sure that you educate yourself sufficiently to know and understand what you’re dealing with, and to the various forms of help that is available. There is just too much at stake not to - if you consider the number of people that die each year from their addictions.
